Kokino
Jovica Stankovski
The archaeological site “Taticev Kamen” – Kokino is situated in the boundaries of the municipality of Staro Nagorichane, at about 35 km. to the northeast of Kumanovo, at an elevation of 1013 m.
The archaeological research started in 2001 and it soon became obvious that the site is extremely rich with artifacts. Chronologically, the material is from the Bronze Age, and the oldest material is from the Early Bronze Age (19th - 17th century B.C.)
Some of the topographic characteristics of the site indicate its use as a sacred mountain, a place where cult rituals were performed. One on them was dedicated to the vegetative cult which was practiced to secure fertility and rejuvenation of nature, and the other cult, with its solar character, can be identified with the ceremonies of the "sacred union" between the God - Sun and the Great Goddess Mother, personified as a peak of the hill.
The research in 2002 attested that the highest part of the site was used as an ancient observatory for observing the characteristic positions of the sun and of the moon.
